Fotograph Prof. Dr. Volker Turau (left) and Stefan Unterschütz The 2011 2nd place VDI-Award of 1000 € was granted to Stefan Unterschütz. The award ceremony took place on May 17th 2011. The VDI-Award is annually granted by the «Hamburger Bezirksverein e.V. im Verein Deutscher Ingenieure (VDI)» (Hamburg regional division of the Association of German Engineers) for outstanding diploma theses.

The 27-year-old Ph.D. student received the award for his diploma thesis entitled «Modell zur Fehlerinjektion für die Simulation von selbststabilisierenden Algorithmen» (Model for Fault Injection for the Simulation of Self-Stabilizing Algorithms). The thesis was supervised by Prof. Dr. Volker Turau from the Institute of Telematics. Stefan Unterschütz developed a dedicated simulator and a model for fault description. His results enable precise analysis of the impact of faults and the containment process, thus simplifying the design and realization of self-stabilizing systems. Stefan Unterschütz is working towards his Ph.D. at the Institue of Telematics since 2009. The scope of his thesis is reliable communication in large-scale sensor networks.
