Nachrüsten von Kühlschränken für Demand Response

The increasing number of renewable generators (solar, wind) installed in the future will make it more and more difficult to balance produced and consumed power in electricity networks. Traditionally generators are regulated to produce the power needed by the loads. Unfortunately, renewable generators produce power depending on the weather, not depending on the demand of power. Thus, the new approach “demand response” makes loads adapt their power consumption to the availability of power.

The goal of the project is to analyze how fridges can be extended to enable demand response. This requires developing a suitable approach. The approach must be implemented as hard- and software prototype. The prototype is used to validate the approach.

The implementation is assumed to extend an existing domestic fridge by adding components. The thermostat integrated into the fridge is set to a temperature colder than needed. The temperature is measured with a wireless temperature sensor and forwarded to a control computer. The control computer can switch the fridge on or off as needed for temperature control and demand response by disconnecting it from the power network via an Ethernet controlled socket. The Ethernet controlled socket also allows to measure consumed power.
